I bookmarked sites I have used in the past or am currently using in the classroom. My favorite is the Utah Education Network site because it provides lesson plans for Family and Consumer Sciences. I relied on this site during my student teacher semester.
Since I am already familiar with UEN I decided to join a site the middle school math teacher uses with his students, Khan Academy. I have seen students use the site in the classroom but after joining the community can I see for myself why it is a great digital learning community for teachers and students. Teachers have the ability to suggest which math skill a student needs to review and teachers can monitor when and how long a student logged in to review. The math teacher gives a 100 quiz grade when a student spends two hours on Khan Academy between Monday and Friday of each school week.
I think the downfall to Khan Academy though is the simple fact that is only used for math. I think this digital learning community would benefit all teachers and students if there were reviews for history. grammar, essay formats, science, and electives such as FACS. To make the digital learning community more appealing to students it would need to offer rewards such as gift cards, movie tickets, or food for completing X amount of review missions. I have learned students will do almost anything if there is a prize involved.
